Dec 3 - The Mawson Ice Plateau

We went for a drive up onto the plateau today, to look at some of the
huts to be used in the field-training over the next few weeks.
Normally, because of the high winds at Mawson, the plateau is just a big dome of ice, but at present there is a thin layer of snow over the top. In most areas, it is only a few cm thick, so that when you ride over it, the tyres break though the snow and the ice shows through.

The peculiar thing is that when you look under the bike at the tyre-tracks in the shade, the bits of ice showing through are actually glowing brighter than the surrounding snow. There is so much light bouncing around in this enormous great lump of glassy ice, that we are being lit from below as well.
