chains over our boots, got out ice axes & throw ropes and went out
just past East arm onto the ice, around the small nearby island where
a weddell seal just looked at us, then came back out the back of the
iceberg in the harbour (keeping our distance) and then back in. It
was about 1 degree, but at 9 pm it was very sunny so it was just
jeans & shirtsleeve weather. Of course, we took jackets, windproof stuff and gloves, all of which are cunningly outside this oh-so-casual photograph.
If this warm weather keeps up, the ice may start to thaw very
quickly, so we need to make the most of it while it lasts.
