Nov 16 - Quad bike training on the sea ice

Today we had an introduction to Quad bike riding on sea ice and navigation using maps, compasses and GPS.

Yesterday's session was cancelled due to 50-70 knot winds - it was barely possible to walk about the station let alone get onto a bike. With the wind behind you, you'd have to lean back so far into it thatyou felt you were trying to walk along while half-lying down. Today it was much more manageable, though for the first half of the day we were riding into 25 knots winds at -5 degrees which was pretty hard work. The sandwiches were frozen by lunchtime - very crunchy.

Almost every time we stopped, some penguins wandered over to have a look, sometimes they would actually run up from a distance to check us out. When we re-started the motors, they looked a bit startled, rolling their eyes like they do, but otherwise they just come over, stand there watching for a bit and then walk away. Sometimes they sit down and go to sleep.

  1. You don't need a tailwind to be so laid back you're nearly lying down.
