water at Davis is in scarce supply, mainly since during the summer
there is no close supply of fresh glacier to melt. As a result, we
are limited to one three-minute shower every 3rd day, and 1 load of
washing per week.
This summer, one of the projects keeping the plumbers & electricians
busy is installation of a new Reverse-Osmosis water system to
generate potable water from a small hypersaline lake on the edge of
the station.
Mawson Station leader Peter Hackworth is seen returning to the
accomodation with his laundry, after washing it in a very nice low-
water-usage front-loading commercial washing machine.
Antarctica contains a LOT of ice - in total over 30 million cubic km
== 30,000,000,000,000,000,000 litres of ice. That is 70% of the
world's fresh water.

That would be enough for Peter to do his laundry (about 50 litres)
and everyone else's on base, 5 times a day, for about 300,000 million
years.
